Inspiration

We went to see an exhibition of drawings from 1400’s to 1500’s from the Low Countries. These rare Netherlandish drawing were fantastic and showed landscape drawing coming into being as an art form in its own right instead of being just a backdrop for religious paintings.  I loved the organgey glow from some of the sketches and created this free form view of landscape from above that was going to be all shades of orange until I banged over a shade of teal that really made it pop.  Enjoyed this one a lot.

Process

Reduction prints are made by repeatedly carving into a wood block of shina plywood in this case and then printing a colour.  Usually colour printing goes from lighter colours to a final darker colour.  Wood is removed each time until eventually the block is completely gone or the print is complete.  Because the block is progressively carved away, no more prints can be made.

If it is a one colour block this can be an open edition i.e. many prints can be made. If it is a numbered edition that is the number of prints that will ever exist, no more can be made.
