Inspiration
I really like cave paintings for reasons that I find difficult to articulate, here goes…The rawness of the images appeal but at the same time they look like there were highly skilled artists creating these fantastic stories on a cave wall. Something like that! I have only seen a small cave painting in real life in the Spanish mountains but this is inspired by the most famous ones in Lascaux. I just wanted to pay homage to those artists from thousands of years ago.

Process
Reduction prints are made by repeatedly carving into a wood block of shina plywood in this case and then printing a colour. Usually colour printing goes from lighter colours to a final darker colour. Wood is removed each time until eventually the block is completely gone or the print is complete. Because the block is progressively carved away, no more prints can be made. The monoprint background is created using diluted relief inks and sponge done each time a print was made so can vary.
If it is a one colour block this can be an open edition i.e. many prints can be made. If it is a numbered edition that is the number of prints that will ever exist, no more can be made.
